United Reformed Church - Macclesfield...

The URC Church in Macclesfield, was first opened in 1877. From the image to the right you can see how the URC Church Macclesfield, looked before the first stage of the refurbishments in 2010... Now it is fitted out with modern, comfortable seating. Phase ll of the refurbishments is now underway in 2014, linking the main church to the buildings at the rear of the church.

Church History...

The church was originally founded in 1788, when it began in the building which is now the church hall. The present church built in 1877 was a development from that.

This Grade ll listed building was a Congregational Church, until 1972 when union with the Presbyterian Church in England and Wales, brought about the creation of the United Reformed Church. There were subsequent unions with Churches of Christ (1981) - and Congregational Union of Scotland (2000).

When it was built in 1877, Park Green was a very fine example of a Victorian Congregational Church, but it has been much more than a building - it is a living breathing fellowship, whose members are proud of their spiritual and structural heritage. When our forefathers took the decision to build a new church, they did so in 'faith in the future'.

We believe we have done likewise, in adapting our building to meet the demands of the twenty first century. We acknowledge our debt to those who have gone before us - and as they did, in faith look forward...

Church Transported Back to 1876 ...

A forgotten time-capsule dating back to 1876, has been discovered by builders, beneath a memorial stone during our redevelopment programme. The stone jar containing newspapers and photos, was left there over one hundred years ago for people in the future to discover. The capsule was opened by Margaret Southern.

The time capsule was discovered underneath an enormous granite slab, during renovation work. The discovery of the capsule was so exciting, said Minister Marion Tugwood - as there was no record whatsoever of it being hidden away.

In summer 2014 the Time Capsule was replaced under the Memorial Stone, in a new location at the back of the Church - as part of redevelopments to the site to make the buildings more accessible. A new time capsule will also be built into the renovated halls, on Townley Street for future congregations to discover.
